The PS Pevensey Journey – 1973

On July 22, 1973 the PS Pevensey departed Mildura under her own steam after having sat idle for many years on the river bank near the city. Her destination was Echuca, where she was set to become a centrepiece of the historic port. On the journey was former owner of the vessel Cpt Bill Collins alongside the well known Cpt Paddy Hogg. As well, an enthusiastic crew would not only help to run the vessel but begin the task of restoration as they traveled the more than 500 river miles to her destination. In this episode we feature a radio special created to celebrate the arrival of The Pevensey in Echuca where officials including State Premiere Rupert Hamer were waiting.

The radio special featured in this episode was discovered in a wonderful collection of historic audio tapes recorded by Eddy Hazelman. Thanks to Adam Auditori for rescuing the tapes and to Garry Briant for his assistance in restoring a suitable machine to play them on. Footage of the departure featured below comes from the Cr SC Mills collection of films.
