There’s something special about film images from back in time and this clip is no exception. This footage was taken by Cr Syd Mills at the Henley on the Murray in 1955. Apart from the on water rowing activities, ladies from across the district competed in what in previous years had been, the Queen of the Murray contest.
Syd gives us a good look at the large crowds who had turned out for the event and there are shots of a number of his close family members including his mother and wife. Held just on a year after the Queens visit, you’ll notice the re-use of the dais that had been set up in Deakin Ave for the official welcome and it’s interesting to think that only a year after this event, the river would be heading to a record flood level.
If you haven’t seen it before, one of our earliest video clips was of the 1948 Queen of the Murray competition.
