Mildura Gliding Club

Here’s a clip from some of the earliest material we’ve found on STV8 news film so far. It’s from the late 60’s and features a Tiger Moth used by Sunraysia Gliding Club to lift the gliders from the field, before releasing them to sail home. Leaves you wondering where this little work horse finished up.

VH-AAR? I may be wrong but I recall a Tiger Moth that seemed somewhat neglected stored in a Hangar on Mildura Airport during the early 80s.
This would have been the second DH82A VH-AAR, the original being written off when it crashed into Jervis Bay on 29.1.1950. I believe that the Aircraft was owned by someone local to Mildura?

I reckon it was the tiger that LAURIE SMITH owned doing the tug work at the glider field. My father learnt to fly gliders in 1967 Aleck Gething was an instructor at the club, his wife Marnie Gething was a ferry pilot in the RAF during the 2nd WW Aleck flew Lancaster's and Spities the th RAF he took ne for a circuit in the kookaburra trainer when l was 12yo.
Dad had a 8mm movie camera those days no sound camera, he had a reel devoted to the Sunraysia glider club but sadly it was not amongst all the other reels l have here and converted to a CD. Dad may have donated it to the club l don't know.
