The PS Melbourne skippered by Captain Alby Pointon has plied the Murray River at Mildura as a tourist boat since 1966. A year earlier, Alby had purchased the boat at Echuca where it had sat idle for over 20 years. Alby and his team brought it back to life and the Melbourne was then taken downstream to Mildura where Alby refitted it to carry passengers. Introduced by his grand daughter Ashton, this video clip follows that journey, with photographs taken by Alby and a narration by him that was recorded in the mid 90’s.
With Captain Alby Pointon having passed and qualified crew almost impossible to find, the PS Melbourne was recently sold. After close on 60 years, the vessel will eventually return to Echuca and will continue her role as a tourist boat.
